Although Trump and his racist white nationalist kind probably do not know it, Haitians helped the United States to win its independence from England. There were three black units in the Continental Army, with one coming from Haiti with the French to fight in the battle of Savannah, where the Americans were battling the British.
A statue in downtown Savannah depicts five black soldiers and a little drummer boy. The soldiers represent several men from this battle who became famous in winning Haiti’s freedom from France several years later. Legend has it that this little boy grew up to be Henri Christophe, Haiti’s first ruler.
Trump’s despicable comments about Haiti are just a crude continuation of mistreating people who stood with this country in the battles for its founding. African Americans, of course, are familiar with this type of behavior.
