The Stupidity of Respectability

I have been asked several times to comment on Reverend Jasper Williams’ strange eulogy at Aretha Franklin’s funeral. First, a word about Jasper Williams, Jr. His father was a minister and friend of the great Reverend C. L. Franklin, Aretha’s father. Jasper Williams, Jr., grew up idolizing C. L. and was privileged to preach C.L.’s funeral in 1984. I say “preach” instead of “eulogize” because that word better captures the noted–and more appropriate–sermon that Jasper delivered at that time.
